Due to the dynamic development environment and effort required to remake videos, you might see small differences between the displays in some help videos relative to the released versions of the tools. Most of the help provided in these videos is general in nature and does not depend on specific tool versions. If you notice any serious problems related to software versions that result in the presentation of incorrect information, please help us by contacting the JWST Help Desk.

Table 1, below, contains links to data analysis tool help videos that have been posted to the JWST Observer YouTube channel.

Links to many of these video help tutorials are placed directly into many individual articles where it is relevant. For a visual clue, look for the JWST video icon:

YouTube features

For YouTube videos, users should be aware of some nice features provided by the controls at the lower right corner of the video window. These include the ability to go to full screen (to better see details), the "CC" button, which provides automatic closed captioning of the audio stream, and the Setting-Quality option, that permits the user to control the resolution and file size that fits their needs. Controls at lower left allow the user to start and stop the video and mute the sound if needed.

Master list of JWST data analysis tool videos

Table 1 lists the video tutorial from the latest JWebbinar session on Jdaviz. Table 2 lists older video tutorial available in support of JWST data analysis tools along with short descriptions for each video. Links on the video titles in the first column will connect you to each video directly.

Note: the JWST Observer YouTube channel also hosts webinars, recorded JWST town halls from AAS meetings, and other recordings not listed here. When you go to the JWST Observer channel, be sure to subscribe to it to see updates.

Table 1. Videos on JWST data analysis tools from the latest JWebbinar

JWebbinar videos

LengthDescription
13:04This video presents a workflow on a spectrum with emission lines. It shows how to download the dataset from MAST and load it in Specviz, how to select a subset to highlight an emission line, how to measure basic properties of the emission line, how to fit a Gaussian curve to the emission line, and how to measure the redshift of the object.
15:59This video shows how to inspect NIRISS wide field slitless spectra. It presents how to load data into Mosviz, how to use the table to switch from one spectrum to the next, how to use the tools to measure the redshift of an object, and how to save the information in the table.
14:24This video presents a way to extract a 1D spectrum from a 2D spectrum. It shows how to define the trace and background region in a 2D spectrum, and how to run the extraction.
12:47This video presents a workflow with three images. It shows how to load the images in Imviz, how to set stretch and colormaps, how to define a region and do aperture photometry, and how to create a basic color image.
16:35This video presents a workflow to roughly measure the mass of a black hole. It shows how to load a cube in Cubeviz, how to define spatial and spectral regions, how to measure the centroids of the emission lines, how to calculate the angular separation between spatial regions, and how to estimate the rotational velocity and enclosed mass.

Imviz video demos

Length

Description
1:59Opening Image Data: This video is the first in a series of beginner tutorial videos on Imviz. It will demonstrate how to open imaging data in Imviz.
1:24Overplotting a Catalog: This video is the second in a series of beginner tutorial videos on Imviz. It will demonstrate a common practice of overplotting markers corresponding to a catalog, in this instance the photometry catalog output from the JWST pipeline.
1:36Aligning Images: This video is the third in a series of beginner tutorial videos on Imviz. It will demonstrate how to open 2 images side-by-side in 2 separate windows and link them by WCS.
1:50Exploring the Plugin Toolbar: This video is the fourth in a series of beginner tutorial videos on Imviz. It will demonstrate how to interact with the data using the tool itself, as opposed to using the notebook.
3:45Aperture Photometry: This video is the fifth, and last, in a series of beginner tutorial videos on Imviz. It will demonstrate how to perform aperture photometry.

Specviz video demos

Length

Description
2:24Open a Spectrum: This video is the first in a series of beginner tutorial videos on Specviz. It will demonstrate how to open a spectrum in Specviz.
1:58Model Fitting: This video is the second in a series of beginner tutorial videos on Specviz. It will demonstrate how to define spectral subsets for model fitting. In this case, the goal is to fit a background continuum model.
3:10Line Analysis: This video is the third in a series of beginner tutorial videos on Specviz. It will first demonstrate how to subtract a model from a spectrum. In this case, the goal is to subtract a background continuum model. Then it will show how to analyze a background-subtracted spectral line within the tool, including the flux, equivalent width, and redshift.

Notable updates
  •
    • Included videos from the JWebbinars.
    • Removed Cubeviz videos because they're outdated.
