WFSC NIRCam Coarse Phasing Template Parameters
The NIRCam Coarse Phasing Template, available in the Astronomer’s Proposal Tool (APT), is used to define WFSC Coarse NIRCam Phasing Operations.
Introduction
The following parameters are used to define Wavefront Sensing and Control Coarse NIRCam Phasing Operations. A Wavefront Control File (provided by the WFSC Scientist) containing 3 mirror control groups must be uploaded prior to the execution of a Coarse Phasing visit.
Coarse Phasing measurements consist of a series of steps that collect NIRCam images of an isolated star, interspersed with mirror control groups. Each imaging step within the series consists of two exposures which may optionally be separated by a small (few pixel) dither. There are three types of exposures: In-focus Imaging, DHS Imaging, and Plus/Minus 8 Defocus Imaging. All the exposures of a given type use the same exposure parameters, and all three types of exposures must be specified.
In addition to the following template parameters, this template will have the Special Requirement WAVEFRONT SENSING added with a default required value of SENSING_CONTROL , and DMS PRIORITY with a value of ELEVATED .
This template cannot be used in parallel and cannot have parallels attached.
Note for developers: the default PCS MODE should be TRACK. If the user overrides this value, a warning should be given, unless the SEGMENT GUIDE STAR special requirement is used.
The NIRCam Coarse Phasing Template consists of the following parameters:

General Information
The following parameters are generic to all templates, and are not discussed in this article: Observation Number, Observation Label, Observation Comments, Target Name, and Special Requirements.
Target
Select the TARGET NAME from the list of targets previously entered. If a solar system target is selected, APT shows a warning.
Expected Number of WFC Commands
EXPECTED NUMBER OF WFC COMMANDS = 1 - 2100
The number of WFC commands expected with this proposal. Default is 170.
Module
MODULE [MODULE] = A, B
This parameter specifies the MODULE to be used to obtain the data.
Primary Dither Type
PRIMARY DITHER TYPE = NONE, WFSC (default)
Select the dither type for this observation. The WFSC dither type is specified in the NircamImagingSubpixel table in the PRD (future link to PRD).
In-Focus Imaging Parameters
Configuration
The following configuration will be used to obtain the data.
In-Focus Imaging | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Step | SW Pupil | SW Filter | LW Pupil | LW Filter | Subarray |
1 | CLEAR | F212N | F405N | F444W | SUB96DHSPILx |
For Subarray, x = A or B, based on the Module selected.
Exposure Specifications
For each exposure to be executed, specify the READOUT PATTERN, NUMBER OF GROUPS/INTEGRATION, and NUMBER OF INTEGRATIONS/EXPOSURE.
Readout Pattern
READOUT PATTERN [READOUT PATTERN] = RAPID, BRIGHT1
This field specifies the readout pattern to be used to obtain the data.
Number of Groups/Integration
NUMBER OF GROUPS/INTEGRATION [NGROUPS] specifies the number of groups in an integration. The range is 1-10.
Number of Integrations/Exposure
