Safe Mode Recovery Template Parameters

JWST's Safe Mode Recovery Template, available in the Astronomer’s Proposal Tool (APT), is used to recover a science instrument from a Safing event.

Purple text indicates the parameter is Limited Access.

Boldface italics type indicates the name of an APT parameter or a value for a parameter.

(warning)Red text indicates restrictions on a parameter.

(red star) Black text indicates an important note.

Brown text indicates notes for the developers.

Green text indicates the name of the parameter used by Commanding.

Items in brackets - <value> - are required values.

Items in square brackets - [<value>] - are optional.

The Safe Mode Recovery observation is used to recover a science instrument from a Safing event. The science instrument may be either powered off or on.

The special requirements BETWEEN, NO PARALLEL, REALTIME, REQUIRED, and SPECIAL COMMANDING SAFE MODE RECOVERY  are automatically set and may be removed if not needed.

The following parameters are used to define Safe Mode Recovery observation. There are no exposures executed in this visit.

General Information

The following parameters are generic to all templates, and are not discussed in this article: Observation Number,  Observation Label, Observation Comments,   and Special Requirements.

Science Instrument

SCIENCE INSTRUMENT [INSTRUMENT] = FGS, MIRI, NIRCAM, NIRISS, NIRSPEC

Specify the science instrument that is being recovered from Safe.

FGS Guider

FGS Guider = GUIDER1, GUIDER2, BOTH

Select an FGS Guider.

This parameter is only available if SCIENCE INSTRUMENT = FGS.

Set Temperature Control

SET TEMPERATURE CONTROL= YES, NO (default)

Select Yes to set temperature control.

This parameter is only available if SCIENCE INSTRUMENT = NIRISS.

Temperature Setpoint in Kelvin

TEMPERATURE SETPOINT IN KELVIN

Enter the temperature setpoint in degrees Kelvin. (warning) Default is 38.05, range is 30.0 - 45.0.  If SET TEMPERATURE CONTROL=NO this parameter is set to no value and is uneditable.

This parameter is only available if SCIENCE INSTRUMENT = NIRISS.

Temperature Setpoint in Counts

TEMPERATURE SETPOINT IN COUNTS

Enter the temperature setpoint in counts. (warning) Default is 20, range is integers from 0-31.

This parameter is only available if SCIENCE INSTRUMENT = NIRSPEC.

Duration

DURATION [DURATION]

Amount of time required, in integer seconds, for the visit to complete. (warning)A value is required.

Table 1. Default DURATION values for science instruments (in seconds)
